Togo Declares State Of Emergency
In Togo’s northern border region, the government has proclaimed a “state of security emergency.”
According to a government official, the measure would last three months and could be extended by the national parliament.
It gives security forces there more leeway in dealing with the potential of Islamist assaults.
The action comes after an attack last month in a northern town near the Burkina Faso border, in which eight Togolese were killed and dozens were injured.
Togolese troops are stationed in the north to counter a jihadist threat emanating from Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, where al-Qaeda and Islamic State fighters operate.
