Time Bomb: 86% Of Ghanaian Men Have Hypertension
The Ghana Health Service has disclosed that over 86% of Ghanaian men have hypertension but only %14 are aware and less than than are going through health management.
They report that a total of over 1.7million Hgh Blood pressure cases have been recorded in Ghana over the last three years, a situation that has been described as a “time bomb”.
The Non Communicable Disease Control Program department of the GHS says the lifestyle condition is taking the lives of many Ghanaians adding that there is a need to deal with it.
The outfit explains that the leading cause of death has been identified as Hypertension, Diabetes and Cancers.
The deputy Programs Manager of the Non-Communicable Disease Control Program, Dr Afua Commey, says for a country like Ghana with a small population of over 30million recording these high numbers of such lifestyle diseases is just “too much” and for education and lifestyle changes.
Reports shows that out of the over 1.7million cases 626,353 new BP cases were reported in 2019, while 569,613 new cases were recorded in 2020 and another 547,835 new cases in 2021.
On Diabetes, Dr Commey said 178,037 new cases were recorded in 2019, an additional 174,192 recorded in 2020 and 549,835 in 2021.
Dr Commey ad iced the public to.do regular check ups Asa adding that their checks have revealed that 86%of men are hypertensive but are unaware.
She said gone were the days when people in their 70s were reporting of stroke because in recent times young people as young as 30 are getting strokes due to poor diet and poor lifestyle.
She warned against the eating of Monosodium Glutamate commonly used in Cubes, Onga, Jumbo, Gino cube and Maggie cubes.
