Students In Training Colleges To Feed Themselves
Over ten thousand teacher trainees from various institutions of education would have to feed themselves starting May 8, 2022.
However, due to the government’s tremendous debt, PINCOF feels it will be unable to continue feeding the trainees.
On Tuesday, April 19, 2022, PRINCOF’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Harriet Naki Amui, wrote to the Minister of Education, stating that if funds are not made available, teacher trainees must cover their food by May 8.
This legislation was imposed on the inability of educational institutions to pay for meals.
Food providers withheld their services until they were compensated after months of not being paid.
Most institutions now have food supplies that only last one week in order to provide three (3) meals per day to students.
On April 23, the PRINCOF statement made the following four recommendations.
Trainee teachers will be given two meals, breakfast, and supper, for one week, from April 23 to 30, 2022, but only lunch from May 1 to 8, 2022, and will be required to provide their own meals until their feeding allowances are paid, and finally, “food vendors will be encouraged to increase the quantity of daily meals they cook for students.”
“All of these efforts are meant to prevent academic calendar interruption,” the statement said.
