Ernest Ocloo, a mathematics teacher at Sawla Senior High School (SHS) in the Savannah Region, was sentenced to 15 years in prison with hard labor by a Tamale High Court presided over by Richard Kogyapwah.

The defendant was arrested after allegedly rapping a female student at the school.

A 7-member jury issued a unanimous guilty decision, according to Salia Abdul-Quddus, Northern Regional Chief State Attorney.

According to him, the offense occurred on November 12th, 2019.

He said that the defendant pleaded not guilty at the start of the trial.

The accused instructor allegedly raped the girl (name withheld) after inviting her to the staff common room.

The victim bled profusely as a result of the sexual contact, prompting the teacher to bring her to the ladies’ dormitory and flee.

Colleagues of the victim who witnessed her in distress requested assistance and transported her to the hospital for treatment.

The teacher was eventually arrested and charged with rape before the Bole Magistrate Court.

Meanwhile, the mathematics teacher has been fired by the Ghana Education Service (GES).

Ernest Olcoo has been accused of sexual misconduct with multiple female pupils at Sawla Senior High School, according to a letter signed by the Director-General, Prof. Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa.

The letter further indicated that on November 11, 2019, the teacher acknowledged to having sexual intercourse with a female student in the staff common area.

“Mr. Ernest Ocloo is in the habit of sexually harassing female students in the school. My recent practice and precedent, such misconduct is punishable with the termination of appointment, management, therefore, recommend that the appointment of Mr. Ernest Ocloo should be terminated in line with section 63(iii)(b)(vi) page 86 as contained in the code of conduct for teachers and other workers of the Ghana Education Service.”

According to the letter, management hopes that this would serve as a warning to all Ghana Education Service employees that such behavior will not be tolerated.
