Reveal to Us How Money You Have Generated Through Covid Levy- Murtala Dares Gov’t
Tamale Central Member of Parliament on the ticket of the leading opposition party National Democratic Congress(NDC), Murtala Mohammed has called on the government to tell Ghanaians how much money has been generated through the Covid-19 levy so far.
The lawmaker said it’s the right of the ordinary taxpayer to know how much money has been received by the levy.
Speaking on the New Day show with Johnnie Hughes on Tuesday, July 19, monitored by Vimnewsghana.com, the MP noted that the government must account for the funds received.
“Ghanaians deserve to know how much they have paid so far into the Covid levy,” he said.
Reacting to the free water and electricity the government provided to Ghanaians during the peak of the pandemic, he said the gesture cannot be equated to free because Ghanaians are now paying for it through the Covid levy.
“They never gave free water and free electricity. You gave us free water and electricity and asked us to pay back, how can that be free?”
The controversial covid levy comes after the negative impact of the coronavirus pandemic, to raise revenue to support Covid expenditures and to provide for related matters.
The law was assented to by the President on 31 March 2021.
