On Thursday afternoon, a group of teenagers got into a fight with a 61-year-old man over a piece of property.
At around 1:00 p.m., some youth from Kabanye, a Wa suburb, clashed with the 61-year-old Inusah Abdul Rahman over a plot of property along the Wa-Kumasi highway.
The youth had gone to stop some employees from developing the land when the 61-year-old alleged owner, who had hired the laborers, emerged with a pump-action rifle and began firing sporadically at them, according to sources.
According to the report, the youth was unharmed, but five innocent travelers on the Wa-Kumasi route were killed by the gunfire.
They were taken to Wa Municipal Hospital, where Stephen Mane, a 64-year-old retired lecturer from Dr. Hilla Liman Technical University, was pronounced dead.
Three of the wounded were admitted to the hospital when the media arrived, while one was hurried to the operating room for an operation.
The 61-year-old gunman has been detained by the Upper West Regional Police CID pending further investigation.
Abdul Rahman Inusah has been recognized as the suspect.
DCOP Peter Ndekugri Anumbugre, the Upper West Regional Commander, told the reporters that the suspect claimed he acted in self-defense.
“In fact, he informed me that he was being pursued and that the only thing he could do to save his life was to pull out the gun and shoot at them, scaring them,” DCOP Anumbugre.
