On February 22, 2022, police in Accra reported an attempted bullion van heist at the Industrial Area in Accra.

According to a police statement, a neighboring officer intervened and halted the robbery.

The fleeing suspects inflicted injuries on three victims.

“During an attempted heist of a bullion vehicle in Accra’s Industrial Area, a police officer on duty nearby intervened aggressively to thwart the robbery,” the statement read.

According to the statement, “as the criminals fled the scene, they opened fire on the bystanders indiscriminately. Three people were injured to varying degrees and were sent to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for treatment”.

“The Inspector-General of Police spoke with the hospital’s medical team and the victims, assuring them of the necessary support,” the statement stated.

“Beyond the police involvement, the armoured bullion vehicle employed saved the lives of the officials and police officer onboard the vehicle, despite the criminals firing into the van. As a result, it is vital to reiterate the Police Administration’s appeal for all financial institutions in the country to adopt such fit-for-purpose vehicles for their cash-in-transit operations,” it continued.
