
Over 500k Ghanaians Are Divorced – 2021 Population Census Reports
According to the most recent data from the 2021 Population and Housing Census (PHC), 553,065 Ghanaians have had their marriages dissolved, while 405,090 have split.
These numbers were derived from interviews conducted with participants during the 2021 PHC, which took place from June 27 to August 15, 2021.
According to new data from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), females account for 362,233 of the 553,065 divorced people, while males account for 190,832, resulting in a 65.5 percent and 34.5 percent share, respectively.
The bulk of the over 400,000 couples who have separated were females, with 252,079 individuals; the remainder 153,011 were males.
According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census, there are 8,366,466 married people in Ghana, with 6,748,622 of them not having registered their marriages and only 1,617,844 having done so.
Divorced vs. Separated
Separated: A person who no longer shares living quarters with his or her spouse, but whose marriage has not been formally dissolved.
Divorced: A person who has not remarried after their marriage has been annulled or dissolved in a court of law or by custom.
