NUGS And SRC To Pay For 3,000 KNUST Deferred Students Fee
The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) and the Students Representative Council (SRC) of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science Technology (KNUST) are organizing funds to pay the fees for the 3,000 out of the 6,000 students deferred by the University.
“They said, they are trying to organize and help the SRC to pay for more students. In an interview on Wednesday with an Accra-based news agency, Dennis Appiah Larbi President of NUGS said, they have the target of about 3,000 of them for their fees to be paid to avoid deferred of their courses.”
He added that there are several plans on board that concern the remaining students as well, in line with the Association to meet the student’s demands.
The NUGS President said they had a negotiation with authorities and stakeholders including the Minister of Education concerning the deferment of the students once they can pay the arrears.
Mr. Larbi assured the students that the association would do their possible best to ensure their deferment was reversed and return to campus.
“He also assures all the students affected that NUGS and the SRC will work together to ensure they return to campus and continue their studies.”
Mr. Larbi described the decision by the University to defer the students as “harsh” and that will affect their rights to education.
“In addition, he appreciates that the University needs the funds to run the institution and they hope that their education shall be a right and not a privilege.”
Dr. Daniel Norris Bekoe, the University Public Relations Officer, alleged that some of the affected students had invested their fees in ventures, including online taxi services (uber), and gambling belting among others.
