Nigerians Flood Ukraine Embassy In Abuja, Volunteer To Fight Russian Attack

Hundreds of Nigerians are attempting to return home from Ukraine, and there are claims that 115 young men have promised to help Ukraine battle Russia.

The men who stormed the Ukraine Embassy in Abuja also put their names in a register provided by the embassy, according to the Guardian in Africa’s most populous country.

Bohdan Soltys, the Ukraine Embassy’s Second Secretary, confirmed the development but said no action had been done yet.

The volunteers may have been reacting to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s recent call for people all around the world to join the fight.

The President accused the Russian army of killing people in a message made last Sunday and congratulated Ukrainians for having the fortitude to defend themselves.

He claimed that Russia’s attack was not only an “invasion of Ukraine,” but the start of a fight against democracy and basic human rights.

Zelensky had appealed to anybody who wanted to fight alongside Ukrainians in the defense of Ukraine, Europe, and the world.

This comes as the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), a rights group, chastised President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration for its attitude to Nigerians fleeing Ukraine.

“Like other parts, President Muhammadu Buhari’s Presidency fumbled again,” the group’s national coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, said in a statement.

“This time, it failed miserably because it failed to efficiently and timely evacuate Nigerians from Ukraine many weeks before the inevitable war broke out, following Russia’s foolish invasion of Ukraine on President Vladimir Putin’s illegal instructions.”
