NIA Confirms Stampede At Headquarters Over Sim Card Registration
On Tuesday, March 22, 2022, a stampede occurred at the National Identification Authority headquarters in Accra, resulting in one person being sent to the hospital.
Corporate Affairs Officer Henry Myers-Aboagye confirmed the news to the media, saying that the event occurred at the entrance when the gates were opened on Tuesday morning.
“I don’t know the specifics,” he continued, “but I was told there was a stampede at the gate as the gates were opened.”
Applicants had been advised to be patient at the gate, according to Mr. Myers-Aboagye.
“We have advised the public to simply join the wait when they arrive at the gate. However, they will not listen, and it might be challenging at times. We called the cops in to assist, but it can be overpowering at times,” he said.
The difficulty to obtain the National Identification Card has caused many Ghanaians to crowd the premises of the National Identification Authority to execute new card registration, record changes, or collect their cards as the deadline for SIM card re-registration approaches.
For SIM re-registration and other formal procedures at state and private institutions, the Ghana Card is the primary and only identity card.
Chaos and long lines have plagued the deployment of a mass registration and issuing of the Ghana Card across the country.
