Nigerian police have initiated an investigation after 31 people died in a crush in Port Harcourt, the country’s southernmost metropolis.

Yesterday morning, an incident occurred on a sports field where a church was handing out meals to the underprivileged.

Women and children made up a large portion of those who died in the crush.

Witnesses claim that as individuals trying to enter the building were pushed back, some were trampled while others were pushed.

To get the situation under control, security and emergency services were dispatched to the location.

The military hospital in Port Harcourt is treating some of the injured.

The event has left the King’s Assembly Church “very grieved,” and it is “reviewing its safety and crowd control protocols.”
