The President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe has described as “brainless” the decision not to allow passports to be used as part of the SIM card registration, questioning whose decision it was.
The government has announced that from today October 1, it will commence a nationwide SIM card re-registration which will only be enabled with a Ghana National Card
Mr Franklin Cudjoe believes that decision is a brainless policy adding that the passport remains a bonafide public document recognised by not only Ghana but all countries as a legitimate document.
Minister of communication, hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful announced that the re-registration of SIM cards is necessary as there is an increased use of communication services since the outbreak of Covid-19 increasing the use of digital methods of engagement.
“Foreigners visiting Ghana can acquire a SIM card using the passport or travel card but they can only use the SIM card for 30 days after which it will be deactivated.
“Foreigners intending to use the SIM card for more than 30days would have to obtain a non-citizen Ghana card to do so”, she stated.
Mr Cudjoe reacting to this on his Facebook asked “If there are fake SIM cards in the system, how is that the doing of those millions of us who registered earlier legitimately? Shouldn’t the Telcos be asked to identify and block those fake cards? Exactly how will the National ID card being the sole identity requirement for a RE-REGISTRATION of all SIM cards prevent the infiltration of fakes?
He later came back with a more detailed post questioning if ef the re-registration is even necessary.
