Gov’t Announces SIM Registration Self-Service App
By the end of June this year, a self-service app will be made available to help with the continuing SIM card registration process throughout the nation.
Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Minister of Communications and Digitalization, stated in Parliament on June 23, 2022, that the action is a part of initiatives to lessen traffic at registration outlets.
The deadline for SIM card registration, which is now July 31, 2022, would not be extended, the minister added.
Because the Ghana Card will be the only primary document required for SIM registration, she advised those who had not yet registered to do so before the deadline.
People “went to sleep when the date for the deadline was prolonged by four months,” according to Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful, who is also the MP for Ablekuma West.
The exercise had been scheduled to expire on March 31, 2022, but it had to be extended until July 31, 2022, to allow for the registration of all subscribers.
Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful was replying to a query on the urgent measures the ministry was taking to relieve crowding at SIM registration centers from Tempane MP Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba.
During her response, the minister cited other steps taken to lessen congestion at the centers, including an increase in MNO agents and devices as well as the expansion of the registration process to include neighborhoods, churches, mosques, and event venues.
She continued by saying that community ICT centers and post offices had been added as service centers to widen the exercise to reach more people. All MNOs were also ready and eager to put up registration points in various offices when invited to do so.
The minister stated that the SIM registration program was created to help law enforcement identify actual, valid, and accurate SIMs on mobile networks, hence reducing fraudulent and criminal actions made possible by mobile phones or other devices that support SIM cards.
