Over 100 stores have been destroyed by a fire at Takoradi temporary market in the Western Region.

The event, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, resulted in the destruction of property worth thousands of cedis.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire started about 2 a.m. but quickly grew out of control after multiple attempts to extinguish it proved ineffective.

The National Fire Service took more than five hours to put out the fire and prevent it from spreading to other portions of the market.

The inaccessibility of the location was blamed by some eyewitnesses for the ferocity of the fire.

“The Fire Department has gone above and beyond. I have to give it to them,” a merchant said.

“However, individuals have blocked the highways with their cargo, which is why the fire has become so strong.” Another bystander remarked, “If it hadn’t been for that, the Service would have dealt with it as soon as the fire erupted.”

Meanwhile, Kwabena Okyre-Darko-Mensah, the Western Regional Minister who also serves as the Acting Municipal Chief Executive of Takoradi, paid a visit to the area after the fire was put out.
