AMA Charges 115 Persons For Immerse Filth

A total of 115 people have been charged by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly(AMA) for failing to observe its 2017 Sanitation bye-laws between January and March 2022.

Their wrongdoings include dumping of waste into drains, burning of refuse in residential areas, insanitary drains In front of their premises, non-registration with accredited waste collectors, overgrowth of weeds in their surroundings, and open defecation.

The Mayor of Accra, Elizabeth Naa Kwatsoe Tawiah Sackey disclosed that 345 summons were obtained from court during the first quarter, out of which 304 were successfully served on wrongdoers.

She noted that 12 cases were adjourned with 9 bench warrants yet to be effected.

Elizabeth Sackey said the prosecutions form part of the measures by the AMA to impose its by-laws to enable a clean city.

She stated that persons who fail to keep their gutters unkept in front of their premises, and liquid waste in open spaces will face the law.
