Accommodation Fraudsters Busted After Allegedly Duping 51 Victims
Two accommodation scammers were apprehended when their last victim raised an alarm, resulting in their arrest.
The syndicate, run by an unnamed elderly man, is accused of defrauding at least 51 people while acting as agents.
According to reports, the con artists contact their victims via the internet and arrange for them to visit residences in which they have no ownership or dealings with the owners, after which they demand large sums of money.
They flee in waiting taxis after receiving payment and handing out forged receipts to unwary customers.
However, their luck ran out when their last victim learned about the plot and alerted the authorities.
The perpetrators were apprehended and handed over to the police after attempting to flee the area.
A search found the suspects possessed three ID cards (voters, driver’s license, and Ghana card) with the elderly man’s image on three different identities, according to the victim, Derek Ofori-Akyea.
Two official receipt books were discovered, revealing that they had issued bogus receipts to 51 people for amounts ranging from GHS 24k to GHS 50k.
A Honda automobile with a forged license plate was also discovered.
