2 Robbers Sentenced To 50 Years For Stealing Taxi
Two laborers were sentenced to 25 years in prison by an Accra Circuit Court for snatching a taxi cab and GH350 from a taxi driver during a crime spree.
Sunday Bawa, nicknamed Joe Pussy, and Musa Ayuba pled not guilty to three counts of conspiracy, attempted robbery, and robbery at first.
After a thorough trial, they were declared guilty by the court, which was presided over by Ms. Evelyn Asamoah.
According to Chief Inspector Emmanuel Haligah, Bawa and Ayuba, both 22, took a cab from Circle to Teshie at 1 a.m. on November 22, 2021.
He claimed that when they arrived at their destination near the LEKMA hospital, Bawa, who was seated in the back, feigned to pay the ticket.
Bawa put powdered pepper over the face of the cab driver, George Obeng, as he turned to accept the money.
“Ayuba, who was sitting in front, took advantage of the situation and forcibly snatched the car key and exited,” the prosecutor added.
According to C/Insp. Haligah, Obeng managed to get a hold of Bawa and decided to bite Bawa’s right middle finger during a fight.
Sensing danger, the two left with the key and GH 350, leaving a cellphone in the taxi.
He claimed the driver, who was injured in the mouth, filed a complaint with the Teshie Police Department.
Following an inquiry, the police apprehended Bawa, who had identified the phone that had been left in the taxi.
He later led the police to Ayuba’s hideout, where he was apprehended.
“After arresting Ayuba, the police were able to get the key from his room.
“Both of them told the police in their caution statements that on October 18, 2020, they kidnapped another vehicle from its owner, which was also under investigation at the Teshie Station Criminal Investigations Department,” the prosecutor noted.
